  • What is the difference between White Gold, Platinum and Palladium?

White Gold is a mixture or alloy of pure gold and other metals. To make white gold, the other metals used can be Rhodium, Palladium or Silver. The different carats or fineness of gold determines the amount of pure gold in the alloy. 9ct gold has 37.5% pure gold, 18ct has 75%. For this reason the natural colour of "white" gold is a whitish yellow. To achieve the shiny bright white finish the white gold alloy is plated with rhodium. As you wear the item this plating will wear thin, revealing the yellow colour of the pure gold in the alloy. For this reason white gold items will need to be re-plated on a regular basis, we can do this for you for a nominal charge.
Platinum is a white metal, the fineness used is 95% pure platinum, for this reason platinum jewellery will always stay white in colour although it will scratch and dull with wear. We can re-polish any platinum items for you, restoring them to their former highly polished state.
Palladium is a relatively new metal in jewellery terms. It has been used predominantly for wedding rings as a lower cost alternative to Platinum. It is a much lighter metal than Platinum, approximately half the weight and depending on current metal prices around 1/3 of the price. Like Platinum the fineness used is 95% thus it will always stay white, albeit a very slightly darker, duller colour than platinum. It is also very slightly softer than platinum meaning it will exhibit wear more quickly.
